I really think the women in porn were so much more sexier and more memorable stars in the 1980's/early 90's.Todays stars seem to look very much alike {hair, makeup, etc}.Maybe its because i grew up in the 80's and my first porn experiences where in that period? Generally though i find most porn of today not as good of quality as the 80's early 90's period.I really loved Nina's big blonde hair and tanned tight bod in that time period.Nina looks just as good now as that time though! Beauty is timeless!

I used to think that, but now I'm not so sure. I think the real difference is that there is just hundreds to thousands more films being made, hundreds more women, plus films are just made faster nowadays. If one thing is different, its that older women were valued more back then, and thus showcased a lot more.

That's for sure, Artdog.
There was a wider range of ages permitted in the '80's and '90's, I think. Now, the emphasis is on newnewnew, youngyoungyoung. Young is good, but I always got so angry that they wouldn't use me with the younger women. Pull in both audiences that way: the Nina fans and those who prefer the unknown performer. It was always a head scratcher, that. Putting two new, young women together makes for a weak scene, as no one knows the drill. It never made sense to me. Still a bit tweaked over that one, actually. I'm working next month for Girlfriends Films, and will have a good time there, and am doing another Syrens of Sex this month. One scene with Jada Fire and one scene with two young men. Life is tough! |

I don't know if one could argue if the girls where more attractive then or not, but I think what worked better in the pre-gonzo days was that there seemed to be a star system. There were A-list talent who could typically get through a script, as well as perform a scorching sex scene, and they seemed to get hired all the time. Now maybe I'm naive, and they were all blowing the producers for work, but I think this is what's missing, there is no star system to work up too.
It seems that as soon as someone is established, they start their own production companies and hire new talent. There is such an emphases on new, and most porn shot is just sex, nothing else, in the gonzo style. Now, I myself do like some gonzo, I particularly liked the older Buttman stuff when he worked with people like Zara Whites, Angela Summers and of course the incredible Nina Hartly. What made Buttman interesting was that here was a chance to see these porn STARS in faux natural style, without a script. When everything is shot without a script, it turns into double anal, piss mop, blech stunt porn in order to be different. When I just entered into watching porn, there didn't seem to be much in the way of contract girls. What made this fun is: you could watch actress A in a Vivid video, and be impressed, than see her in a VCA video and watch her get realy nasty in a John Leslie or Greg Dark flick. Now, girls start off doing shit they probably shouldn't be doing, get a bit of press, sign an exclusive contract with a company, make the same video over and over again, or sign to a company that doesn't really excel at what got them famous and than... dissapear. Of course, I'm sure their are plenty of performers who got totally fucked with the "star system". And I agree that alot of the story porn was just laughably bad. Than again, this badness was alway charming to me, as I'm sucker for DIY films. ![]() Last edited by rossedm28 : 04-08-2006 at 01:39 AM. |

This kind of fits into this topic.
The Porn industry has pretty much zero respect for it's history. I hadn't been to the local porn shop for some years. A couple of weeks ago I headed out to 2 of the larger ones in town to look up some classics and favorites from when I was big into porn in the 90's. There was nothing really there. There was wall to wall videos of all genres, most seemed to be relativly new, and mostly of them compilations of scenes. My porn watching habits are a little different, I have my favorite stars, but mostly I like to watch based on directors. I remember a time when Buttman and Andrew Blake, and certian series of films had their own sections and they were kept stocked pretty much complete. Not any more. Between the 2 stores, I found 1 Greg Dark flick (A recent one, Psychosexuals), only 10 Blake vids (nothing pre "Sensual Exposure") NO Stagliano, including Fashionistas which is pretty recent, none of John Leslies classic features like "Curse Of The Catwoman" and "Dog Walker", just a few "Fresh Meat", and the heartbreaker of them all: no Nina guides, no Dark Paradise, none of the private sessions, NONE of the films I was hoping to find! Lots of new girls, none of the classics. They only had "Devil In Miss jones" because it's included with the new sequel. I'm sorry, "Devil In Miss Jones" should be in every video store, as it's an incredibly important porn film. Of course the people to ultimately blame is us, the porn consumer. If we demand newness all the time, rent 7 vids at a time and watch them at 16X speed until they get to a "good" part, this probably wouldn't be an issue. And I guess what ultimately saddens me is, how much porn is lost because it's "consumed", rather than appreciated?? Is this really any different than a film like "London After Midnight" (Okay maybe it's a little different ) which was really popular when it's came out, and now no longer exists to be viewed? Someone once said "There is no such thing as old movies, just movies you haven't seen". It's kind of tragic that people can no longer see some of the great talent from as little as 10 years ago. IAnd to keep this on target: the reason I wanted to get some of the films from the past is the main problem with Gonzo porn is: You have to be a genious to edit them. Guys like Stagliano are damn fine editors who can cut together a 35 minute sex scene that's interesting and maintains a sexy level. There is a ton of people trying to have 30 minutes sex scenes so they can have a 2.5 hour DVD, and the sex just isn't working. The 90's was the opposite problem. Some times the scenes would be cut so short they would drive you nuts, but fuck, they drove you NUTS! Alot of the current porn has me fast forwarding through the sex scene itself. That is completly wrong! ![]() |

I think there are still some directors out there who still sort of adhere to Buttman's style. John Leslie, Joey Silvera, Stoney Curtis, Seymore Butts, and Jules Jordan being a few. I'd also put Pussyman and Patrick Collins in there too, but I wasn't sure if they were still active.
I think the main thing I miss, is the everybody-basically-fucks-everybody approach. Just seemed to put everyone in a much better mood, at least that is how it looked. Wasn't that uncommon to see Nina and some other women in a film with 4 guys, and have fucked them all by the time the film was over. Now its usually just films of unrelated scenes. Yeah, things were different when I started.
Mainly, the "formula" hadn't been created yet, so there was a lot more spontaneity in a scene: you fucked in a position for as long as you wanted and then moved to the next one, until the director said that you were done. Now, it goes like this: oral one way: 3.5 minutes each, hard and soft oral the other way: 3.5 minutes, ditto vaginal position one: 3.5 minutes, ditto vaginal position two: 3/5 minutes, ditto anal position one (if applicable): 3.5 minutes (no soft core) anal position two (ditto): 3.5 minutes (ditto) Plus stopping for stills after each position. That's for features. In gonzo, they're not much different, but they'll do all the positions up to the pop shot, and then stop and go back and get stills for each positon (better remember what they were!). It gets boring, certainly. The sheer expansion of the available talent pool over the past 20 years is something else, too. From about 50-100 performers (full and part time) in '84, to a thousand now. It's much harder for a person to stand out from the crowd. The star system is pretty much dying: there will be no more Jenna Jamesons, I'm afraid. |

There is one thing that's better about porn now, though - the haircuts are much, much better.

Perfume V: you got that right! I can't stand to see myself with that big '80's hair and those shoulder pads! Yikes!
J.R., There are pros and cons to the current state of technology, certainly. While the MILF genre is a new thing, and it allows for more women to stay in the business for longer, there's not enough MILF work in non-internet porn to support all the MILFs who might want to do them. Most of the company owners are still stuck on young, because that's their fetish. The companies that do a lot of MILF movies tend to be smaller and newer. We'll see how it all plays out, eh? |
